Nadeem and Rahanna Sunil have been living in Thailand since 2013, when they fled Pakistan. Their Thai tourist visas have long since expired so they are undocumented in Thailand.
The Thai government has a policy of agressively searching for and arresting "aliens". They detain refugees in squalid contitions and deport them. For Nadeem, returning to Pakistan would be a death sentence. Although Nadeem works under the table at times, most of their days are spent in an apartment, in hiding. They are declared refugees under UNHCR protection, but Thailand isn't a signatory to the UN Convention on Refugees. They live in fear of arrest.
In January of 2019 a member of the MRSG (at his own expense) travelled to Bangkok to visit the family. He recorded this interview in the family's one room apartment.
