The Sunils are coming to Canada!
The refugee family we have been sponsoring since 2018 are finally scheduled to arrive in mid-September. After landing here, they must quarantine for two weeks and then move to their own accommodation. We are still seeking a self-contained one or two bedroom suite with a yard, a good kitchen and high walkability to buses, shopping, services and community in Colwood or Langford.
If anyone knows of a suite that fits this criteria, please contact the Metchosin Refugee Sponsorship Group. Wewill provide their references and finances for the year.
THE BACKGROUND:
In 2018, we heard the story of Nadeem and Rahana Sunil and their young daughter who are stuck in limbo in Thailand. Nadeem was a Pakistani photo-journalist who reported on what he calls the illegal actions of “..some bad men…”. His reporting angered supporters of an affiliated political party.
Shortly after his account was published there was a serious attempt to kill Mr. Sunil on a roadside in Karachi.
Pakistan is listed as one of the most dangerous places in the world for reporters, and when you add a religious conflict it can be deadly for journalists who expose abuses by powerful people. Mr. Sunil escaped with his life but he and his wife were forced to flee their home and country. (Nadeem and Rahana Sunil are pseudonyms we created to keep them and their extended family in Pakistan safe.)
TODAY
Nadeem and Rahana Sunil have been living in Bangkok as refugees since 2013. They have been forced to flee from immigration police a number of times. The Sunil family have lived in fear of being arrested by Thai authorities, sent to a detention centre and then deported to Pakistan where they face death.
In 2017 their daughter was born, a girl who has spent most of her life hidden in their apartment, without playmates and without friends.
In the summer of 2021, the Metchosin Refugee Sponsorship Group learned that the IRCC has accepted their application for refugee status. Their tickets are finally booked to arrive in Victoria in the middle of September. We are very happy and there is much work to do to prepare for their arrival.
